The National leadership of Asaga Ohafia Development Union (ADU), has been commended for organizing one of the best Asaga Day cultural events in the history of the community.
The commendation was made by a former President General of the Union, Engr. Omaka Onugu, during the Asaga Day 2025, held on December 30th at the Uma Ukpai Memorial Primary School, Asaga, in Ohafia L.G.A.
The reverred Engr. Omaka who was the chairman of the Occasion applauded the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the planning committee for what he described as successful and colourful event that revived some of the community’s lost cultural activities.
The event which began with a carnival train from coronata junction had a few age grades, branches, Ojojo cultural troupe in the queue.
Ekponiboro and erinma masquerades which were revived by the ADU also joined the carnival train followed by onye ije, a masquerade that has also been missing in action for over a decade, Ekpe Akpan and Ekpe Ukwu Asaga.
The carnival procession moved in that order to the Uma Ukpai Memorial Primary School field where they took turn to showcase their artistry.
The event also showcased the presentation of Nku Wei Wei, a long lost traditional rite done by maidens for a bride preparing to get married.
Highlights of the event was a civic reception in honour of elected and appointed sons and daughters of Asaga and the presentation of awards to deserving philanthropists.
It is hoped that the 2026 edition of Asaga Day and carnival will be more beautiful if all the eligible age grades, branches and masquerades get involved in the procession.
Asaga elites and others who can purchase Western carnival costumes are also encouraged to create bands bearing their names. This will add the needed glamour to the carnival, which is expected to attract tourists to the community as the carnival gains popularity.
